Why vinyl

Vinyl is a plastic film, not paper. It does not absorb water, does not tear when a corner lifts, and holds its colour outdoors far longer than a paper sticker. For anything that will be rained on, washed, or handled by strangers, it is the default.

The trade-off is thickness: a vinyl sticker is noticeably thicker than paper, which is fine on a laptop and occasionally wrong on a curved, small-radius surface.

Lamination is the durability decision

Unlaminated vinyl prints are water-resistant but scuff easily: a sticker on a water bottle will lose ink at the edges within weeks of going through a bag.

A laminate film — gloss or matte — is the layer that makes a vinyl sticker genuinely durable. It protects the print from abrasion, UV and cleaning products. If the sticker will live outdoors or be handled daily, specify lamination; it is the difference between a three-month sticker and a three-year one.

Adhesive by surface

Surface Adhesive note
Glass Standard permanent acrylic works well
Smooth plastic (PET, HDPE) Low-surface-energy adhesive needed on some plastics
Powder-coated metal Textured surface reduces contact area — test first
Painted walls Removable adhesive if the sticker may be taken down
Fabric Not recommended; use a sewn or heat-transfer alternative

The most common vinyl sticker failure is not the vinyl — it is the wrong adhesive on a low-energy plastic.

Cutting and shape

Die cutting follows the contour of the design. Simple shapes (circle, square, rounded rectangle) avoid a custom die and cost less at low quantities. Complex shapes are cut with a die, which is a one-off cost that makes sense at higher volumes.

Kiss cut is an alternative: the sticker stays on a backing sheet and is peeled by hand. It suits sheets of small stickers and designs that are awkward to handle individually.

Quantity and cost

Vinyl costs more per square metre than paper, lamination adds a pass, and a custom die adds a one-off. At 50 units, simple shapes without lamination are the entry point; at 5,000, the die and the laminate barely register per unit.

Ordering

Send the surface, the environment (indoor, outdoor, wet, cleaned regularly), the size, the quantity and the artwork. If the sticker must survive a dishwasher or a solvent wipe, say so — that changes both the film and the laminate.

Questions we get before every order

What is the minimum order for vinyl stickers?

50 units per design. Mixed designs can be combined in one order where the material and size match; ask us and we will confirm before quoting.

How long does production take?

Typically 7–12 working days after artwork approval. Delivery time depends on destination and shipping method, and is confirmed with the quotation.

What artwork do you need?

A vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) at final size, with fonts outlined. If you only have a PNG or JPG, send the highest resolution you have and we will tell you whether it is usable before you pay anything.
