Permanent vs removable label adhesive

How adhesives behave on glass, plastic and painted surfaces, when removable is genuinely removable, and why glue fails before the material does.

Buyers spend most of their attention on the face stock and almost none on the adhesive. That is a mistake: in practice, more labels fail because of the glue than because of the film.

What the adhesive has to do

Three jobs, and they conflict:

  1. Stick initially — enough tack to hold on contact, especially on a curved surface.
  2. Stay stuck — resist water, oil, cold and time without sliding or lifting.
  3. Come off cleanly — if the application requires it, without leaving residue.

A permanent adhesive optimises the first two. A removable adhesive trades some of the second for the third. Neither is “better”; they solve different problems.

Permanent

Permanent acrylic adhesives are the default for product labels. They build adhesion over hours and reach a strength that makes clean removal difficult — which is the point on a bottle that must not be re-labelled by a customer.

Two variants matter:

  • Standard permanent — glass, board, most plastics.
  • Low-surface-energy (LSE) — for HDPE, PP and powder-coated surfaces where standard acrylic does not wet out and the label slides or lifts.

The most common failure we see is a standard adhesive on a recycled HDPE bottle. The label looks fine for a day, then lifts at the edge.

Removable

Removable adhesives are designed to peel cleanly for weeks or months, depending on the grade and the surface. They are used for promotions, returnable containers, retail price labels and anything the end user is meant to take off.

Two honest caveats:

  • “Removable” is a duration, not a promise. A removable label left on a car windscreen in summer sun for a year may leave residue.
  • Surface matters more than the adhesive. Removable on glass is clean; removable on uncoated paper or cheap paint can pull the surface with it.

Adhesive by surface

Surface Adhesive Why
Glass Standard permanent Smooth, high energy, easy bond
PET / rigid plastic Standard permanent Good wet-out
HDPE / PP LSE acrylic Low surface energy resists standard glue
Powder-coated metal LSE or test first Texture reduces contact area
Painted wall Removable Permanent pulls paint
Frozen packaging Freezer-grade Standard turns brittle at −18 °C

Temperature and time

Adhesive performance is a function of temperature at application and in service. Applying a label below about 5 °C reduces initial tack, and a label applied cold may never reach full adhesion even after warming up.

Freezer applications need a freezer-grade adhesive that stays flexible at −18 °C; standard acrylic goes brittle and the label cracks or lifts at the corners.

What this means for buyers

Name the surface, not just the product. “A 250 ml bottle” is not enough — glass, PET and HDPE need different adhesives even at the same size and film.

Ask about application temperature. A label applied in an unheated warehouse in January behaves differently from the same label applied in July.

Removable is a specification, not a feature. If clean removal matters, say how long the label will stay on and what surface it is on; the answer changes the adhesive.

If a sample lifts, the film is rarely the cause. Before switching from PP to PET, check whether the adhesive was specified for that plastic — it usually was not.

Quick answers

Will a permanent label come off without damage?

Usually not cleanly. Permanent acrylic builds adhesion over hours and pulls fibre, paint or laminate when removed. If the label has to come off, specify removable and state the surface and the time it will stay on, because both change the adhesive.

Does removable mean reusable?

No. A removable adhesive peels cleanly from a smooth surface for weeks or months, but it loses tack once lifted and will not hold again on a dusty or textured surface. It is designed for clean removal, not for repeated repositioning.
