Label sizing and dimensions
Label sizes for jars, by fill weight
Label dimensions for 4 oz to 32 oz jars: jam, candle, cosmetic and candle-tin sizes, plus lid labels and why the jar shoulder changes the answer.

A jar has less straight body than a bottle of the same height: the shoulder curve starts early and the base has a radius. That is why a label sized from the jar’s overall height creases at the top, and why the numbers below are smaller than buyers expect.
For the measurement method, see the label size guide.
Typical sizes by fill weight
| Jar size | Diameter | Body height | Label | Lid circle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 oz (60 ml) | 50 mm | 40 mm | 40 × 35 mm | 45 mm |
| 4 oz (120 ml) | 60 mm | 55 mm | 50 × 45 mm | 55 mm |
| 6 oz (180 ml) | 65 mm | 65 mm | 55 × 50 mm | 58 mm |
| 8 oz (240 ml) | 73 mm | 85 mm | 60 × 60 mm | 65 mm |
| 12 oz (360 ml) | 80 mm | 95 mm | 70 × 65 mm | 72 mm |
| 16 oz (480 ml) | 88 mm | 100 mm | 75 × 70 mm | 78 mm |
| 32 oz (950 ml) | 100 mm | 130 mm | 85 × 85 mm | 88 mm |
Lid circles assume 3–5 mm of visible lid around the label.
Why the shoulder decides the height
The straight section of a jar body is shorter than it looks. On a typical 8 oz jar with an 85 mm body height, the shoulder curve starts about 12 mm below the rim and the base radius takes another 6 mm. That leaves roughly 67 mm of genuinely flat, vertical surface.
A 60 mm label fits comfortably. A 70 mm label reaches into the shoulder and lifts on one side, because the application cannot be perfectly square by hand. Subtract 6 mm from the measured body height before choosing, and the problem disappears.
Jam, candle and cosmetic jars are not the same
| Jar type | What matters | Typical label |
|---|---|---|
| Jam and preserve | Condensation after filling, fridge storage | 60 × 60 mm, PP with chill adhesive |
| Candle | Glass warms to 50–60 °C, wax residue on the surface | 60 × 65 mm, heat-resistant adhesive |
| Cosmetic cream | Oil contact, bathroom humidity | 55 × 50 mm, PP with matte laminate |
| Honey | Sticky residue, slow pour | 65 × 55 mm, PP, oil-resistant adhesive |
Same jar shape, different adhesive and film. The size is similar; the specification is not.
Wrap or panel on a jar?
Jars are wide relative to their height, so a full wrap covers a lot of glass and leaves little product visible. Most brands use one of three layouts:
- Front panel only — 60–70% of the circumference, leaving glass visible at the sides. The classic preserve look.
- Full wrap — for a strong colour block or a pattern. Circumference for a 73 mm jar is 229 mm; add 4 mm overlap.
- Front plus lid — the label carries the brand and the lid carries the variant. Common on candles, where the lid is often the largest flat surface available.
A lid label is also the cheapest way to add a variant without reprinting the body label: one body label, three lid designs.
What this means for buyers
Measure the body, not the jar. Total height includes the lid and the shoulder, and neither is printable.
Decide whether the lid carries information. If it does, size the body label for brand only and put the variant on the lid.
Match the adhesive to the filling temperature. A candle poured at 60 °C and a jam filled at 85 °C stress the adhesive differently from a cold-filled cosmetic.
Keep 3–5 mm of lid visible. A lid label that covers the lid completely looks like a mistake and hides the closure colour.
Order the lid circles with the body labels. A second run for a 60 mm circle costs more in setup than in labels.
Quick answers
What size label fits an 8 oz jar?
A 60 by 60 mm label on a standard 73 mm diameter jar, or 65 by 65 mm for a fuller look. On a 4 oz jar at 60 mm diameter, 50 by 45 mm is typical. Measure the straight body height, not the total jar height.
Can I put a label on the jar lid?
Yes, and it is common on candles and preserves. Use a circle 3 to 5 mm smaller than the lid so the lid edge stays visible: 55 to 58 mm on a 63 mm lid, 62 to 65 mm on a 70 mm tin lid.
