“Is this label durable?” is unanswerable without a condition and a duration. The same material can last five years on a warehouse shelf and three weeks in a shower.
Expected life by material and condition
| Material | Indoor dry | Chilled / humid | Frozen | Outdoor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coated paper | Years | Weeks | Days | Days |
| Water-resistant paper | Years | 1–3 months | Not suitable | Not suitable |
| PP | Years | Years | 1–2 years | 6–12 months |
| PET | Years | Years | 1–2 years | 1–2 years |
| Vinyl (sticker) | Years | Years | 1–2 years | 2–5 years, laminated |
These are ranges, not guarantees: adhesive, lamination and surface preparation move the outcome more than the film alone.
What shortens label life
- Condensation — water at the edge is where lift starts.
- Oil and solvents — soften adhesive and attack print.
- UV — fades ink and embrittles film; lamination is the buffer.
- Abrasion — handling, packing, transport.
- Temperature cycling — freeze–thaw stresses adhesive and laminate.
- Curved, small diameters — constant peel force at the edges.
Lamination as a multiplier
On PP or vinyl, a laminate can multiply service life several times over by keeping water and abrasion away from the ink. On paper it helps but cannot rescue an unsuitable material.
If a label must last outdoors or in a bathroom, laminate is not a cosmetic upgrade — it is the durability specification.
How to test
A material data sheet describes a film in a lab, not your product in your conditions. The practical test:
- Apply a sample to the actual container.
- Store it exactly as the product is stored.
- Inspect at 24 hours, one week and one month.
- Look at the edges, not the centre — failure starts there.
A month of real testing is worth more than any datasheet, and it costs one sample run.
What this means for buyers
State the condition and the duration. “Must survive six months in a fridge” is a specification; “durable” is not.
Budget lamination where life matters. It is a small share of unit cost and the largest single factor in service life on film.
Paper is a short-life material outdoors, whatever the coating. If the product travels, specify film.
Test the edges. A label that looks perfect in the centre can be lifting at the edge, which is where it will fail.
Quick answers
How long will a paper label last outdoors?
Days to weeks in weather, not months. Paper absorbs water and the print fades without a UV barrier, so edges lift and the ink blooms. Even a coated stock only delays it. For an outdoor label, film plus laminate is the starting point, not an upgrade.
Does lamination really extend label life?
Yes, and by more than most buyers expect. The laminate keeps water and abrasion away from the ink and, on PP or vinyl, can multiply service life several times. On paper it helps but cannot rescue a material that is wrong for the condition.
